Cities of Asylum’s Jazz poetry concert at Sampsonia Way, Pittsburgh
Cities of Asylum and Sampsonia Way
In 2004, City of Asylum/Pittsburgh opened its doors on Sampsonia Way in Pittsburgh’s Northside neighborhood with the specific mission to provide sanctuary to literary writers who were exiled and under threat of persecution. For two years they provide an exiled writer (and family) with a house, a stipend, and medical benefits and make sure that they can continue to write and their voices are not silenced. They offer a broad range of literary programs in a variety of community settings to encourage cross-cultural exchange.
Jazz Poetry Concert
The popular outdoor event features a lot of great artists. The great Oliver Lake returns, with Dee Alexander and her trio – Harrison Bankhead, Miguel de la Cerna, and Ernie Adams – plus featured poet Joy Harjo. This year’s poets and writers include Wang Jiaxin (China), Sridala Swami (India), Israel Centeno (Venezuela), Khet Mar (Burma), and Yaghoub Yadali (Iran) – and there will be some surprise guests as well.
The concert will be webcast live on Livestream at http://www.livestream.com/jazzpoetryconcert.
The Sampsonia Way Online Magazine
The online magazine, Sampsonia Way, seeks to protect and advocate for writers who may be endangered, to educate the public about threats to writers and literary expression, and to create a community in which endangered writers thrive and literary culture is a valued part of life.
The magazine’s key staff includes exiled writers living on Sampsonia Way, a street in Pittsburgh that spans cultures and languages, which was conceived with their advice from within their own experience of exile and repression. All ICORN guest writers are encouraged to contribute to the magazine!
