Elsinore, Home of Hamlet, joins ICORN
Elsinore City of Refuge is a collaboration between the Municipality of Elsinore, the Elsinore City Libraries and the International People’s College (Den Internationale Højskole), where the writer/artist will be hosted.
During the ICORN Board Meetings in Copenhagen this week, Copenhagen confirmed their recommitment to ICORN, and both cities will be ready to host a writer or artist before the end of the year. ICORN Programme Director, Elisabeth Dyvik says:
"With a rapidly increasing amount of applications from persecuted writers and artists for placement in a City of Refuge, the commitment of the Danish cities is important. Today, both Aarhus and Copenhagen are dedicated members. It is a great privilege to have the City of Elsinore on board, and we look forward to a fruitful partnership in the years to come. And hopefully, they will inspire more Danish cities to join, to take concrete action to protect and promote human rights and freedom of expression.”
The Shakespeare Festival at Hamlet’s Castle was established at Kronborg Castle in 1816 and is a grand annual Danish event, celebrating Shakespeare in the settings of Kronborg – Hamlet’s very own castle. This year, 2016, the world celebrates the 400 anniversary of Shakespear’s death.
