ICORN participates in European Parliament hearing
Monday 10 January at 3pm the European Parliament Subcommittee for Human Rights organises a hearing on how Europe/the EU should work to protect human rights defenders.
Emergency visas and shelter cities
The hearing is a follow up to a report Chairwoman of the subcommittee, Ms Heidi Hautala presented June 2010. The hearing will focus on actions taken by the EU to secure a better protection of human rights defenders. Among the central topics on the hearing agenda are the issues of emergency visas and the possible establishment of a system of shelter cities for human rights defenders.
ICORN director Helge Lunde has been invited to address the European Parliament hearing. In his intervention, Mr Lunde will point to vital experiences ICORN has gained through the work of protecting and promoting writers and human rights defenders. Mr Lunde will also declare the readiness and willingness of ICORN to take part in the future development and implementation of the idea of a system of shelter cities to human rights defenders.
The hearing will take place at the European Parliament, in Brussels, from 15.30 to 17.00 and the meeting will be webstreamed.
Draft programme for the hearing.
