ICORN is recruiting!
While spaces for free thought and expression are shrinking on a global scale, the number of Cities of refuge joining ICORN is growing. Cities around the world are stepping up their work for freedom of expression in response to the increasing number of persecuted writers and artists in need of safe spaces to continue their work.
The current crisis in Afghanistan has shown a whole world how journalists, academics artists and activist can be left with no option but to try to leave their country. At the same time ICORN receives pleas for safe havens from actors for change in over 80 different countries, including Belarus, Ethiopia, Yemen, Myanmar and Iran.
To increase our response as a network, and to further professionalise the residency programme, ICORN is recruiting two new positions to the secretariat in Stavanger.
The Training & Development Coordinator will work to strengthen and develop the capacity of ICORN cities to protect and promote persecuted writers and artists:
The member cities are the main drivers and pool of resources in ICORN’s work to fulfil its vision and mission: to protect and promote persecuted writers and artists from around the world. The training and development coordinator will work to strengthen and develop the capacity of the ICORN cities to receive, host, protect and promote their residents, so that they can continue their work for human rights and freedom of expression, at home and abroad. The Communication & Outreach Coordinator will work to help ICORN communicate its key messages more effectively, and to expand the outreach and impact of the network worldwide:
ICORN bursts with untold stories; stories of hardship, persecution and increased crackdowns against freedom of expression, but also of courage, escape and refuge. Stories of resilience, creativity and impact, stories of persecuted writers and artists, protected and empowered in their safe havens, making a difference for human rights and democracy at home and abroad. It is the task of ICORN’s new communication and outreach coordinator to gather these stories, to make sure the voices of the most vulnerable change actors are heard, and to work together with ICORN’s key actors and stakeholders to expand the impact of the network worldwide. The application deadline is 26 September 2021.
