Paris and Mexico strengthen ties in their commitment as capitals of exile
Throughout the twentieth century, Paris and Mexico City have been host cities and safe havens for exiles from around the world, for intellectuals and artists. Both cities joined ICORN early on and are deeply involved in the fight for freedom of expression.
The strong ties between the cities was reinforced last year in the framework of ICORN, by signing a cooperation agreement, emphasizing their continuation and cooperation on promoting the idea of cities of refuge for writers in exile.
These values lie at the core of the international strategy of the City of Paris, and we are delighted that the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced last week that Paris will host the 2016 ICORN General Assembly.
Among the speakers were:
- Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano, Special advisor in charge of Culture at the Mexican Mayor’s cabinet
- Miguel Angel Estrella, Argentine Ambassador to UNESCO
- Philippe Ollé Laprune, , French Director of the Casa Refugio Citlaltépépetl de Mexico
- Patrick Deville, author and sponsor of the meeting
- Peter Ripken, president of the ICORN
- Helge Lunde, CEO of ICORN
The literary meeting "Paris-Mexico City, capitals of exile" is organized by the Casa Refugio Citlaltépetl Mexico, the City of Paris and Mexico City. It forms part of the week of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2015 (May 31 to June 7).
