Re:writing the future - the ICORN General Assembly 2020
ICORN, the International Cities of Refuge Network, works for improved conditions for freedom of expression worldwide. More than 70 cities and regions in Europe, North-, Central- and South America have so far committed to ICORN, offering long-term temporary residencies for writers, journalists and artists who can no longer work safely and freely in their home country.
In June, we gather the network for ICORN’s 10th general assembly in the City of Berlin; 30 years after “die Wende”, the fall of the wall, the reunification of east and west, a time of hope and belief in a common future of freedom and democracy. 300 writers, journalists, artists, human rights defenders, city coordinators, political representatives, civil society organisations, partners and observers will join forces under the title Re:writing the future.
Re:writing the future together
With a broadly perceived need for change in the projected course of events in the world, Re:writing the future suggests that we all play an active part in shaping our common future. Representing a creative and disruptive power, writers and artists can bring about awareness, influence political orders and mobilize civil society. We will discuss the conditions of freedom of expression today, the role and responsibility of cities, and explore best practices in protection and promotion of writers and artists at risk. Together we will reframe and rewrite a future where writers, artists and journalists can work freely and independently, wherever they want, without fear of persecution.
On the axis from Brandenburger Tor via Unter den Linden to Berlin Alexanderplatz, we offer a rich programme of workshops, debates, readings, exhibitions, film screenings and much more. The programme reflects Berlin's history of division, migration and refuge, as well as its current position as a welcoming community for artists and newcomers.
Alongside distinguished ICORN writers and artists on the programme, we welcome a wide range of writers, artists and experts from Berlin and around the world, among them Nobel Prize-winning author Herta Müller. Updates will follow about confirmed speakers and performers in the weeks and months to come.
Hosts and organisers
We are pleased to be hosted by and collaborate with the City of Berlin – the Senate Department for Culture and Europe and Allianz Kulturstiftung, in cooperation with managing partner of the ICORN programme in Berlin, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme.
