SPRING 07 Empty Chair: Jamshid Karimov
It is estimated that more than 500 prisoners were set free. The the governor of Jizzakh, responded by firing into the crowd- killing over 700 civilians and children. This became known as the Andijon Uprising.
Jamshid Karimov was one of the few independent journalists who criticized the Uzbekistan government's handling of the Andijon Uprising. Despite the fact that Jamshid Karimov is the nephew of President Isam Karimov, the journalist received threats of imprisonment. Jamshid Karimov's mother has told reporters that they had to remove surveillance bugs from the family home. In September it was reported that Jamshid Karimov's passport was revoked. On September 12th he disappeared.
Convinced that Jamshid Karimov was taken into custody for political reasons, the Committee to Protect Journalists issued a statement on September 26th protesting for Jamshid Karimov's release.
International PEN's Writers in Prison Committee has confirmed that Jamshid Karimov is being held in a mental institution, a common tactic to silence political dissidents in some countries and in the former Soviet Union.
