We are delighted to announce that Sarpsborg, located in eastern Norway, joined ICORN after signing the Membership Agreement at the City Council Meeting on June 16th, 2022.

By joining a network of more than 70 cities worldwide, Sarpsborg’s Mayor Sindre Martinsen-Evje has expressed the importance of sharing international responsibility in protecting and promoting freedom of expression and human rights. Sarpsborg looks forward to welcoming its first ICORN resident in the near future.

The Mayor of Sarpsborg further underlined the crucial role played by arts and culture in fostering and safeguarding democracy and fighting injustice, adding that:

‘We have a collective responsibility to take care of those who are not as lucky as us. Sarpsborg municipality takes that responsibility today.’

Elisabeth Dyvik, ICORN’s Programme Director, welcomed Sarpsborg to ICORN by saying:

‘It is a pleasure and honour to welcome Sarpsborg as a member of ICORN. By joining ICORN, Sarpsborg has demonstrated that it is willing to take serious and concrete action in the daily fight for human rights and freedom of expression’.
