On Friday 30th May 2024, Geneva became the latest city to join the International Cities of Refuge Network. The city signed the ICORN Membership Agreement during the Closing Plenary Session at the 2024 ICORN General Assembly in Copenhagen.

Tamara Wiher, a representative from the City of Geneva and the Chair of the ICORN Board Annika Strömberg were the signatories of the Membership Agreement. They were joined on stage by representatives from partner organisations Donatella Bernardi, Director of Maison Rousseau et Littérature, and Alix Parodi, President of PEN Suisse Romand.

The City of Geneva’s Administrative Council approved the proposal for Geneva to join ICORN on 6th December 2023. The ICORN residency in the Swiss city will be hosted and coordinated by the Maison Rousseau et Littérature.

With a rich tradition of protecting human rights, Geneva is the second ICORN City of Refuge in Switzerland, joining Bern in committing to protect and promote freedom of expression, democratic values, and international solidarity.
