A well-known author and poet, Salem Zènia has been given a diploma of honor from the Tamazgha Association in Paris, for his contributions to Amazigh literature. Zènia is a journalist, poet and novelist.

He is also the editor of a francophile monthly publication. Because he writes in the Kabylic-Berber language of Amazigh, and because of his human rights activism, publication of his books has been prohibited in Algeria. He resided as guest writer in Barcelona City of Refuge from 2007 to 2009.
